The Flowers Wait for No One
Before the bougainvillea shoot, I prepared three plans. None of them survived.
Before the bougainvillea shoot, I did my homework. I saved more than twenty reference photos, planned three camera positions, even rehearsed where my hands should go — on the brim of the hat, behind my back, resting lightly on a branch. I thought a shoot meant performing what had been rehearsed.

Standing before the flowers, the plans failed one by one. The wind was stronger than forecast and the hat would not stay; the light had drifted thirty degrees from where I wanted it; and worst of all, the flowers — they bloomed far more densely than in any photo, so that whatever pose I struck beside them looked like I was competing with them for the scene.
I could not out-compete them, so I gave up posing and simply stood among the branches, watching them sway. After a long while I noticed a small thing: the bougainvillea's 'flower' is not a flower at all, but three leaves that changed color; the true flower is tiny, a white dot, hidden at the center. I had always known it was pretty. That day was the first time I saw how it was built — it turns its most flamboyant part into a supporting act.
I thought I had come to photograph the flowers. Later it felt more like the flowers had allowed me to stand beside them for a while.
All four frames finally chosen were 'outside the plan'. The one looking back happened because the wind lifted my hair and I turned instinctively to check that no branch had snapped. The eyes-closed one happened because the fragrance came so close that closing my eyes was more reasonable than keeping them open. They were not designed. They were waited for.

So what I learned was not 'how to photograph flowers' but an order of operations: arrive first, then look, look until you forget you meant to shoot, and only then press the shutter. The flowers wait for no one's readiness — had I come back fully prepared, the flowers would still be those flowers, but that afternoon would no longer be that afternoon.
These photographs are collected in the work Blooming Anytime. The title was also settled that day: a flower's logic is not to bloom on schedule, but to bloom anytime. Perhaps that is a person's logic too.
